The new Gjallarhorn 10 watt amp sounds like Schiit...

Published about 1 year ago • 2 min read

Hello Audio Friends,

Schiit Audio has been very busy lately, releasing several new products, including their new amplifiers, the 2 watt Rekkr and the 10 watt Gjallarhorn.

Both of these units are small in size, low in wattage and class AB in design. I think these amps are Schiit's attempt to compete with all of these inexpensive class D amplifiers from China that have become popular in the last year or so.

I bought both the Rekkr and the Gjallarhorn the day they were announced and recently posted my review of the latter amp.

Schiit claims that even though the Gjallarhorn is only 10 watts per channel, it can still play loud enough to be a "lease-breaker", aka, really annoy your neighbors.

Well, I took them to task and got my decibel meter out to test the loudness on this little amp and was very surprised at the outcome.

If you'd like to know more about how loud I was able to play the G-horn, check out my video below:

If you'd like to read more about the Gjallarhorn, I also posted a review of the unit over at my Forever Analog blog.

More thoughts on the Schiit amps...

I've never had a true desktop music system, especially at work. I'm now using the 2 watt Rekkr amp in my office and it sounds amazing, especially at low volumes, where I still get a great amount of detail and soundstage.

The Gjallarhorn is an interesting amp because I found the extra wattage at work wasn't necessary, as the Rekkr handled everything just fine. Instead, I've been using the Gjallarhorn at home, paired with my high sensitivity, vintage Klipsch Heresy speakers, where the amp has performed better than I expected.

I've had people asking me to compare these amps to class D models and I did so with the Rekkr, comparing it to the Aiyima T9 Pro, but it's not really an apples to apples comparison since the T9 Pro is an integrated amp, while the Rekkr is...just an amp, lacking volume control, multiple inputs, streaming, etc. If you are interested in learning more about the Rekkr, check out the video below:

I love that Schiit is trying to make a dent in the class D market by offering amps that have a fraction of the power, with an AB design and yet still sound surprisingly great.

I don't earn any commission from recommending Schiit gear, but check out their website for more info on these amps, as I think they will surprise you with their performance!

Twin Power!

If everything goes as planned today (lol), I will be working on a video review of this Harman Kardon 430, "twin powered" receiver for my YouTube channel.

This little receiver only puts out 25 watts per channel, but they are deceiving watts given each channel has it's own dedicated power supply!

I'm so excited to have this 430 back in my life, as I've sold the previous ones I've owned before.

More info on the 430 next week!

Vintage Audio Themed Shirts

Friendly reminder, I design and sell vintage audio themed shirts in my Etsy Store. All proceeds are invested back into buying gear for the blog and YouTube channel!

Thanks for reading!

Hello Hifi Friends, I'm attempting my first live stream on YouTube, tonight, (Monday, 2.5.24) at 7pm CST. The purpose of the live stream is to hang out and answer questions, but I'll also have a stack of cheap CDs (and some vinyl and cassettes) that I've recently purchased to show you in between questions. There are a couple of CDs that surprised me...especially finding a one released by an indie record label I interned for in Los Angeles almost 25 years ago! I believe you can follow this...

Hi Everyone, I love all things analog, but I grew up mostly listening to CDs and therefore have owned many traditional CD players over the years. As vinyl prices continue to rise, I've begun to venture back into the digital world (who can pass up a CD copy of Miles Davis' A Silent Way CD for just $1?) and stumbled into the rabbit hole of external DACs and CD transports. What is a CD transport? In short, it's a CD player that does not have an internal DAC so you have to connect it to an...

Hi Everyone, I review a lot of audio gear which requires moving products in and out of my home audio system. Some of these components are brand new while others are vintage. I now own a handful of products that make using vintage gear much easier and I wanted to share those quickly with you. (Should you consider purchasing these items, I will earn a small commission which helps fund my purchases of new products to review.)
